In this program I was allowed to observe a social studies class taught by Yoshida Kenichi Sensei.
Teaching Methods
I observed the social studies lesson in class 7D (IB Class). There are two learning methods used in this lesson, namely discussion and question and answer methods. During the lesson, students were assigned to fill in the handout prepared by the teacher. The handout contains the positive and negative impacts of two job recruitment methods, namely recruitment in Japan and America. In this lesson, students are expected to be able to analyze and compare the recruitment process in Japan and America. At the end of the lesson, students explain their opinions and discuss in class regarding the handout that has been done. The opinions given by the students are also discussed again by the teacher using the question and answer method, so that the opinions become actual data based on facts. This learning can hone students' critical thinking through the inquiry learning model. The teacher designed maximum student activities to search and find their own answers to the questions in the handout which in turn can hone students' critical thinking.
Learning Material and Innovation
The material presented by the teacher was about the job recruitment process in Japan and America. Students have learned the material in the previous meeting and for now they are assigned to find information related to the positive and negative impacts of the two recruitment methods. The innovation in this lesson is that students are given the opportunity by the teacher to exchange opinions, both among students and with the teacher.
Source of Learning
The learning resources used in this lesson are textbooks and the internet.
Authentic Assesment Used by Teacher
The teacher directly provides assessment related to the handout done by students with discussion and question and answer methods, so that students can directly know whether their opinions are based on appropriate facts or not.
